Have you ever wished someone would love you just a little bit more?
Perhaps you've been through a breakup, you're feeling lonely or you've spent so much time looking after everyone else that you've almost forgotten about yourself.
When we're feeling like that, it's tempting to look for something outside ourselves to make us feel better.
Someone to notice us. Someone to tell us we're enough. Someone to make us feel wanted.
And there's nothing wrong with wanting those things.
But I have a different kind of love spell for you today.
We're not going to try to attract a particular person or change how somebody feels about us.
Instead, we're going to spend a little time thinking about the love we give so freely to other people.
And what might happen if we saved a little of it for ourselves.
What Is a Self-Love Spell?
When we think of love spells, we often imagine romance, attraction and finding that special someone.
But love magic doesn't always have to be about another person.
In modern witchcraft, self-love spells are used to focus our intentions on self-acceptance, kindness, confidence and emotional wellbeing.
And I think it's important to say something here.
You don't have to love everything about yourself to practise self-love.
You don't have to wake up feeling confident, have everything worked out or suddenly become someone who never doubts themselves.
Some days, simply treating yourself with a little more patience is enough.
That's where we're going to begin.
The Magic Behind Our Ingredients
For this spell, I've chosen a few things that are traditionally or symbolically associated with love and kindness.
A pink candle
In modern candle magic, pink is often associated with affection, friendship, tenderness and emotional healing.
We're using it to represent the care we'd like to offer ourselves.
If you don't have a pink candle, a white one is perfectly fine.
Rose petals
Roses have been associated with love and beauty for centuries, appearing in mythology, poetry and art.
In modern spellcraft, rose petals are often used in love rituals.
For our spell, they represent the kindness and affection we give to others.
Rose quartz
Rose quartz is commonly associated with love, compassion and emotional comfort in contemporary crystal traditions.
We're using it as a physical reminder of our intention.
It doesn't need to be large, expensive or perfectly polished.
And if you don't have rose quartz, choose a small stone that you like instead.
A piece of paper
Sometimes the simplest part of a spell turns out to be the most important.
We're going to write something on this paper that we can keep and return to whenever we need it.
The Love Begins With Me Spell
A gentle ritual for practising self-love, rebuilding confidence and welcoming healthy relationships.
What You'll Need
A pink or white candle and a suitable holder
A few dried rose petals
A piece of rose quartz or another small stone
A piece of paper and a pen
A small dish
Find somewhere comfortable where you can spend a little time without being disturbed.
There's no particular moon phase or day of the week you need to wait for. You can do this whenever you feel you'd benefit from it.
Before We Begin: Setting Our Intention
As with all our spells at The Pathway to Magic, we're choosing to work with positive intentions, for our highest good and the highest good of everyone concerned.
We're not asking to control another person's feelings. We're simply making a little space for ourselves.
Take a moment to say:
May this spell help me treat myself with greater kindness and recognise the care I deserve.
May the love I welcome into my life be freely given, honest and mutual, for my highest good and the highest good of all concerned, with harm to none.
Step 1: Think About Someone You Love
Place your candle safely in front of you, with your dish of rose petals and stone beside it.
Light the candle.
Now think about someone you genuinely care about.
It might be a friend, a family member or even a much-loved pet.
Imagine they're having a difficult day.
Perhaps they've made a mistake, they're feeling rejected or they're convinced they're not good enough.
What would you say to them?
Would you tell them they should have tried harder? That they ought to be different? That they don't deserve to be loved until they've sorted themselves out?
I doubt it.
You'd probably want them to know that one difficult day doesn't define them. That they deserve patience. That they're still important to you.
Hold on to that thought for a moment.
Step 2: Turn Those Words Towards Yourself
Take your paper and write down something you'd want that person to remember.
It could be:
You don't have to get everything right to deserve kindness.
Or:
You're allowed to have difficult days.
Or perhaps something entirely different. Now read what you've written.
Here's the part I want you to think about.
Why should those words apply to everyone you love, but not to you?
You don't have to suddenly believe them. Just allow yourself to consider that they might be true for you as well.
Step 3: The Self-Love Spell
Pick up your rose quartz or chosen stone. Hold it comfortably in your hands. Think about the words you've written and the kindness behind them.
When you're ready, say:
The kindness I give so freely, I now offer to myself.
May I learn to recognise my worth, even on the days I struggle to see it.
May I find the courage to speak kindly to myself, to honour my needs and to recognise when something is not right for me.
I welcome love that is honest, freely given and returned.
And I will remember that I deserve care and respect, whether someone else is beside me or not.
Sit quietly for a moment.
There's nothing you need to feel.
No sudden rush of confidence, no extraordinary experience.
You've simply taken a little time to give yourself some attention.
And that matters.
Step 4: A Small Promise
Take one rose petal from your dish.
Think about one small thing you could do for yourself this week.
Something that you'd encourage a friend to do if they needed a little care.
Perhaps it's making time for something you enjoy.
Maybe it's saying no to something you really don't want to do.
Or giving yourself permission to rest without feeling that you have to earn it.
On the back of your paper, write:
This week, I will be kinder to myself by...
Finish the sentence in your own words.
Place the rose petal on the paper and fold it gently around the petal.
Keep your stone beside it.
Step 5: Closing the Spell
Look at your candle for a final moment.
Think about the promise you've made.
Then say:
May I remember the kindness I have offered myself today.
May I grow in confidence through the choices I make and the care I give myself.
And may the relationships I welcome into my life reflect the respect and love I deserve.
Extinguish your candle safely.
Keep your folded paper and stone somewhere private.
Whenever you're having one of those days when you doubt yourself, take them out and read your words again.
If the rose petal becomes brittle, you can compost or dispose of it. The promise you've made doesn't depend on keeping the petal forever.
What Happens After the Spell?
I'd love you to try something over the next few days.
Notice how you speak to yourself.
Particularly when something goes wrong.
Perhaps you forget something, make a mistake or find yourself comparing your life to somebody else's.
Would you speak to a friend the way you're speaking to yourself?
If not, see whether you can find a kinder way of looking at the situation.
It doesn't mean making excuses or pretending everything is fine.
It simply means giving yourself a little of the understanding you'd offer someone else.
And remember the promise you wrote down.
Try to follow through with it.
Because self-love isn't only about what we think or say.
Sometimes it's about what we allow, what we choose and how we look after ourselves.
A Final Thought
There's something I find interesting about love spells. We often approach them thinking about another person.
Will they love me? Will they notice me? Will someone come into my life?
But I wonder how often we ask a different question.
Am I giving myself the same kindness and consideration that I hope to receive from somebody else?
That doesn't mean you have to love yourself perfectly before someone else can love you. And it certainly doesn't mean that being lonely or having a difficult relationship is somehow your fault.
But perhaps the next time you find yourself searching for love, you might remember this little spell.
Not as a way of giving up on finding someone special.
Just as a reminder that, while you're waiting for love to arrive, you're
still someone worth caring for.
And you don't have to wait for anybody's permission to begin.
