Rune Magic

Discover the ancient symbols of the runes and the meanings, ideas and guidance they have carried through time.

Introduction

Runes are more than symbols used for divination. They began as letters within early Germanic writing systems, but over time they have also become associated with meaning, symbolism and magical practice.

Each rune represents a sound, but its name and traditional associations can also connect it with ideas such as strength, movement, protection, change, abundance or challenge.

Learning the runes does not mean memorising every meaning at once.

Begin by becoming familiar with the symbols themselves. Notice their shapes. Explore their traditional meanings and the ideas connected with them. With time, you may begin to recognise how those meanings shift depending on the question, situation or other runes surrounding them.

Within The Pathway to Magic, you can explore the runes individually, learn their traditional associations and discover ways to work with them for reflection, divination and magical practice.

Traditional interpretations give you a foundation, but they are not rigid rules. As you become familiar with the runes, pay attention to the symbols, ideas and connections that stand out to you. Your own understanding can deepen alongside what has been passed down through tradition.

Working With Rune Magic

Runes are more than an alphabet. In modern magical practice they are often used as symbols for reflection, divination and intention work. The Elder Futhark contains 24 runes, each carrying a traditional name and a cluster of meanings that can be explored through study, journalling and personal practice.

Finding the runes difficult to remember?

You don’t need to memorise all 24 at once. Recording the rune you draw, its traditional meaning and what you notice yourself can help you become familiar with them naturally over time.
